In simple terms Galaxy framework or the Galaxy is an open-source, web-based platform for data-intensive research. It is developed primarily for computational biology, bioinformatics and other scientific disciplines that require the analysis of large datasets. And gradually it is extending to several areas. Its key features are user-friendly interface, tool integration, reproducibility, scalability, data management, collaboration, customization and extensibility and an extensive active community. 

• What is UseGalaxy and UseGalaxy.in?

UseGalaxy refers to a specific instance of an implementation of the Galaxy framework for a specific purpose. UseGalaxy is majorly for the purpose of a geographical region. UseGalaxy.in is for the region of Bharat i.e India. 

• Why contribute to Galaxy Bharat?

To achieve the collective goal of establishing an UseGalaxy instance in Bharat, we need to unite our resources and efforts. A collective voice is essential to advocate that there is a need for this crucial research tool. This collective voice should be presenting its voice by embracing open-source principles and voluntary contributions. And so for every person in India who wants this resource where we can do the research at will, we need to contribute to Galaxy Bharat. 

• Who can contribute to Galaxy Bharat?  (eligibility/qualification/core subject)

Students, academic researchers, research organizations without any age restrictions can contribute with their technical or non-technical knowledge.

• How to contribute to Galaxy Bharat? 

We are excited to announce the initiation of  Galaxy Bharat by introducing some projects and tasks. We are inviting the interested participants to the project, to gain knowledge and experience in different core fields. Please fill the form and someone from the community will get back to you.

• What is Galaxy Bharat and Galaxy India? 

As Bharat constitution says India, that is Bharat its exact meaning what we intend here. Everyone's free to use whatever they want to use. In summary, Bharat and India, both the terms are synonymously used.

For listing your Galaxy events in the Galaxy Bharat, you have to contribute to Galaxy India by filling https://www.galaxyproject.in/contribute-to-galaxy-india as an initial step. After which you’ll be invited into the Galaxy Bharat Mattermost where Galaxy Bharat activities are discussed and tasks related to it done.

Galaxy is designed in such a way that it has capability of processing large datasets using powerful infrastructure and is easy to understand and work with, also it is completely open-source which makes it different from other online resources.

The usegalaxy.in domain was created on 24th Apr 2018. The pace of it can be understood with the time duration. The important thing is that it is still going. The pace of it is determined by the active participation of its volunteers and their passion to have it. 

• How to manage the working hours of contribution?

There are no specific working hours needed as we can work from anywhere anytime.

• Is there any min/max raw data size, min internet speed specifically?

Galaxy can process large datasets with a minimum internet speed of at least 10 Mbps is recommended. One can start with 1 Mbps speed.

• What kind of revolution can be expected by the emergence of usegalaxy.in?

As a free public web server, more indian research aspirants starts using usegalaxy.in

• Who are supporting indian usegalaxy users now?

Galaxy Bharat is aiming to have its own usegalaxy.in server hosted in Bharat. However, we have the domain usegalaxy.in which redirects to https://india.usegalaxy.eu/. Thanks to the EU Galaxy community for supporting Usegalaxy in India. If you already have an account in usegalaxy.eu then please do not create another account for india.usegalaxy.eu but use the same account. Also it is recommended to keep only one account with each instance of Galaxy. 

• What are your views on the market analysis with the emergence of Galaxy India? (How India get benefited on using usegalaxy.in)

There are already multiple usegalaxy instances around the world (.org, .eu, .org.au) however these instances majorly cater to the research projects in those regions. They are openly accessible to everyone. But if the power of usegalaxy reaches more in Bharat research community, existing instances will not be enough. And if the researcher in India need the usegalaxy then it is for the region of Bharat to get it. Having usegalaxy.in will give opportunity to the researchers in India to cater to their requirements. 

• Whom are you considering as your competitors?

In terms of Galaxy framework tools there are few other tools which are doing similar work in terms of Data analysis and also in particular Bioinformatics field however none of them are OpenSource.

The Galaxy Bharat Consortium (GBC) brings together organizations and individuals committed to bring dedicated UseGalaxy to India, facilitating the development and deployment of UseGalaxy.in in Bharat. For more information and explanation please watch this video which was part GBC regular meetings.

It would consist of Non-Profit, Government bodies and private institutions and also individuals who have actively shown interest for the establishment of UseGalaxy.in in Bharat.

• To be part of the Galaxy Bharat Consortium, active participation is essential. This can be demonstrated in one or more of the following ways:

  • Undertaking tasks listed by the GBC

  • Conducting Galaxy training sessions to accelerate in performing tasks of GBC

  • Providing financial support to the Galaxy Bharat Consortium.
